Super Bowl Infographic: The Social Bowl

Not only do we love data, but we also play the role of seasoned anthropologists, keeping a close eye on what’s happening in Social Media. A few of us are also pretty crazy about the Super Bowl and thought it would be fun to smash all three of these passions together like a safety throttling a wide receiver coming across the middle for an outstretched ball.

Because of the high volume of buzz surrounding the Super Bowl we focused our data set on Twitter only. The following infographic displays team sentiment leading up to game day, what Steelers fans snacked on vs. what Packers fans snacked on during the game, the tweeting habits of players from both teams, and (of course), who has the best hair: Troy Polamalu or Clay Matthews?

Things to note:

  • Pittsburgh fans tweeted more pre-game positive sentiment, but Green Bay saw way more positive action in Vegas when it came to betting on the game.
  • Though the food habits of fans from both sides turned out to be pretty similar, Steelers favored the beer. Could this have had anything to do with the fact that they were down 18 in the first half?

Thanks to Carrie Stern for gathering the data and Joel Constantino for putting together the visualization!
