10 Keys to Marketing Success

Without further ado, the most important rules for anyone pursuing a career
in the marketing arts.

1. Have Something for Sale.

If you fail to meet this basic criteria, you need to re-evaluate whether or not you should be in marketing as a career. Perhaps you simply have a chronic need for attention.

2. Be Creative.

This is a step in the right direction. People want pizza, and Pizza Hut has pizza. However, it’s not always this easy.  What if the thing you’re selling isn’t as delicious as pizza? That’s where creativity comes in.

3. Timing.

Despite the obvious savings associated with this strategy, the end result of alienating the taco-loving public should be taken into consideration.

4. Target Your Ads…

A topic near to our hearts. Making fun of Warcraft fans, I mean. Also, targeted ads.

5. …Appropriately.

Although it’s entirely possible this ad is exactly on target for a very specific niche female audience, in which case…kudos.

6. Stay “On Brand.”

When you’re known for something, it’s important to adhere to your strong suit.

7. Have an Exit Strategy.

“When called upon, high performers are as good at correcting mistakes as they are at avoiding them.”

8. Be Multicultural.

According to the 2005 Census, the typical U.S. boardroom features one Asian, a grandfatherly African American and a business woman who is handy with the audio visual equipment.

9. Be Multicultural.

In Poland, however, there are no African Americans. Obviously.

10. You’re Only As Good As the Product You’re Selling.

All the marketing in the world can only sell one copy of the product. Customer loyalty is a factor of brand quality, and delivering on marketing’s promise.
